Regulations 

1) About

RAW: Residencies Arché→Work (RAW) is an itinerant training and creative development program organized by Apordoc and Cine en Ruta, taking place between October and November in Portugal and Spain and including the participation in Arché, which takes place at the Doclisboa International Film Festival’s lab, MÁRGENES/WORK, Márgenes. Madrid International Film Festival’s lab, and an artistic residency in Lisbon. The program was created from the desire to provide a working space focused on the creative process and to promote the interrelation between creation and, film criticism and research.

RAW is divided into two different strands: Creation Residencies, aiming at directors with a film project, and Criticism Residencies, for film critics and researchers.

2) Goals

RAW aims to create a privileged space for training and creative development with the following objectives:

  • To foster the cultural and economic relations between Spain and Portugal;
  • To promote the co-productions between member-countries of the Ibermedia Program;
  • To create market access opportunities to emerging talents, respecting the artistic and economic specificities of each project and considering the production process as an authorial one process as well;
  • To foster the proximity between film production and film criticism and research.

3) Participants

RAW targets film projects that encompass a strong implication in the domain of the real – projects able to experiment the potential and boundaries of its documentary matrix– and to young film researchers in the Ibero-American cinema field.

RAW targets emerging talents with a feature film project in the development, production or post-production stage, as well as young film critics and researchers from member-countries of the Ibermedia Program: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.

 4) Program and activities

Activities start in Doclisboa, where participants attend Arché lab, and have its conclusion in the frame of Márgenes Film Festival, where residents participate in MÁRGENES/WORK.

The program includes project development workshops, public presentations, individual tutorships, meetings with experts, networking activities, podcast creation, both in presence and online. 

During the artistic residency in Lisbon, participants work on the development of their projects, with personalized monitoring by tutors, assigned to each participant. During this period, they will also participate in masterclasses and meetings, both individual and collective.

 5) Dates

In 2024, RAW will take place between October 21st and November 30, as the following calendar:

October 20 – 24: Arché (in the frame of Doclisboa, Lisbon)
October 25 – November 25: Artistic Residency (Lisbon)
November 26 – 30: MÁRGENES/WORK (in the frame of Márgenes. Madrid Intl Festival, Madrid)

6) Expenses and Grants

 Thanks to the support of the Ibermedia Program, one fellowship will be granted to each selected project to cover the following costs:
– Consulting guidance by a tutor, invited according each project’s needs, during the whole duration of the programme;
– Meetings with experts and online masterclasses;
– Creative consulting sessions by film professionals;
– Access to Arché and all associated activities;
– Access to Doclisboa screenings and activities of its industry program, Nebulae;
– Travel expenses from Lisbon to Madrid;
– Access to MÁRGENES/WORK and all associated activities;
– Access to Márgenes Film Festival screenings and activities;

Accommodation and maintenance: meals and accommodation are offered for the whole duration of the residency;

> Travel expenses to Lisbon and from Madrid: travel costs from and to origin country or city must be ensured by participants.

NOTE: In case other members of the projects would like to join the program, they must cover their expenses.

7) Awards

Film projects that take part in the Creation Residencies run for the awards of Arché and MÁRGENES/WORK.

8) Submission

  • In 2024, call for projects is open between April 22th and May 19th, at 23:59 (GMT+1).
  • Registration is free of charge.
  • Required documentation: applicants are required to fill in the application form and to upload the materials as defined in each call:

Creation Residencies
– Project Dossier (max. 8 pages) in pdf format, that includes the following information in Portuguese, Spanish or English:
. Film title;
. Synopsis;
. Director’s intentions note;
. Director’s notes with references to the formal and visual treatment;
. Director’s bio-filmography
. Producer’s and screenwriter’s bio-filmography (if applicable);
. Bio-filmography of the production company (if applicable);
. Link to the work-in-progess or rushes (if applicable);
. Former films’ links (if applicable);
. Estimated working calendar;
. Notes on the current state of development and project’s current needs;

– Provisional budget and financial plan;
– Project stills or visual references;
– Motivation letter (why to participate in RAW);
– Copy of identity card or passport; 

Criticism Residencies
– Academic and professional curriculum vitae;
– Description of the project to be developed in RAW;
– Former research/film criticism work and/or articles (if applicable);
– Estimated working calendar;
– Motivation letter (why to participate in RAW);
– Copy of identity card or passport.

Applications with missing information will be considered incomplete and will not be processed.

9) Selection procedure

A total of 6 projects will be selected: 3 for the Creation Residency and 3 for the Criticism Residency. 

The selection of the participating projects will be made by the organization and 01 independent professional invited. If considered relevant, the coordinators will summon relevant professionals from the sector. 

Assessment criteria will take into account and innovation in narrative and aesthetic forms, as well as the inclusion of non-traditional forms of production and the viability of the project.

For film criticism and research projects, it will be positively valued that the proposals present a hypothesis of materialisation within the framework of the residency: space, structure, medium, support, etc.

For the final selection, video-call interviews will be held with short-listed finalists.

10) Notification: Selected participants will be informed of the results by e-mail before July 31. The selection will remain confidential until the official announcement to be made by the organization.

11) Obligations of the participants

  • Applicants must ensure their availability during RAW dates. Participation in all activities is mandatory.
  • Participants must have medical and travel insurance.
  • Participants authorize the use of images and fragments from the selected films across different media and social networks to promote the festival. The organization also reserves the right to use extracts and images for the festival’s website, catalogue and video materials.
  • Participants must include RAW logotype in all materials (film credits and promotional assets for films). Moreover, they agree to use the following wording “Participant Project at RAW” + RAW logo.
  • Award winning film projects in Arché or MÁRGENES/WORK must include the award logotype in the credits and promotional materials. 


12) Responsibilities and Acceptance of the Terms
and Conditions

– The submission of a project implies the knowledge and acceptance of these regulations.
– Submitted projects must not contain content that infringes any third-party rights.
– Any issue not foreseen in the rules will be resolved by the organization in according to international film festival regulations.
– The organization reserve the right to alter, modify the program at any time.
